Cutting Clear Styrene

I’ve got an HO Tri-Ang observation car with a clear plastic dome on the end, & I’d like to trim it (without shattering it) for some, uh, modifications.

What tool should I use for this task?

(I thoroughly searched the MRR data base but couldn’t find any info.)

Thanks to all,

Paul

It depends on the type of cuts, If you are shortening or “chopping” into sections a fine toothed razor saw would work. First mark the cuts on masking or blue painter’s tape, the “stretchy” flexible cut into strips would work best due to the curvatures. Scribe and carefully start the cuts, you could place a fence or sorts until the cut deepens… Leave a bit of excess that you can later sand/ file to get an accurate fit. It may be nec to place a filler support block wrapped w/ cloth inside to stop any flexing or possible breakage during the sawing.

Paul,

I believe it would all depend on where you need to trim it,as to what you would use. For instance,if you needed to trim it at the top of and along the roof line,or along the bottom, you can use a flat fine cutting Jewelers file, taking your time of course and let the file do the work of cutting. If you need to do the top, that will take some drilling and cutting, with a lot of patience…

Cheers,

Frank
