Well lets just see about that…
On my new dash 9 model from atlas that si what the box says. On the loco side below the window it is lettered c44-9w. So my thought is that it is.

Well the 40 indicates 4000 hp while the 44 means 4400 hp

There may also be other external differences
The conventions for writing out the names of models never really got standardized, so you’ll often times see:
Dash-840CW
and
C40-8W
Which would be the same locomotive. Back in the mid-90s, I saw more “Dash-8” in the magazines and whatnot, whereas today I see more “C40-8W.”
You’ll note that the large control box, fireman side, behind the cab is not there on the C40 whereas the c44 has the large box and high handrails that side. Very little outside difference other than that. I’d have to look up the erection drawing for detail. (I work at GE )
