DART light rail ( Dallas, Tx ) has been having a lot of problems with the ice storm Sunday and the ice fog today. First link says they were using ice melt to clear switches. IMHO a hi rail truck equipped with a heater to blow on the switches would be an idea to consider before the next ice storm approaches.

In addition maybe all light rail operations should consider this option ? The unit does not need to be permanent attached to any truck.

DART is just about up to speed except for the blue line.

I saw several trains sitting along the main just a few days prior to your post. I don’t think they realize that constant operation will help out tremendously. Granted, I’m going off what the M-Line does, but it should help at least keep ice off the catenary.
