Hi everyone,
I just recently purchased the shell and chassis of a 18215 Lionel CSX Dash 8–it is complete expect missing the e-unit.
I also own a 18214 Lionel CSX Dash 8. It has the lionetech electronic e unti in it.
My question is this; can I wire the two motors in the new unit to run off the e-unit in the 18214 ( for a total of four motos)? Or will it blow the electronic e-unit? I know you can hook four motos into and traditional lionel 3-position e-unit, but I don’t know much about these new-fangled electronic ones. [?]
Any help would be great…
Thanks.
D.
Does the engine have open-frame “Pullmor” motors? If it does, I’d be a bit leary of hooking one up to 4 motors. I assume that the Liontech e-unit is built to the same electronic specifications as the LCRU, the early command control board, and I know that hooking four open frames up to it is asking for trouble.
Most likely, Lionel still has Liontech units lying around back in the parts department that can be ordered for a nominal fee. Check the website. If not, someone out there probably bought 200 million of them at the factory sale a couple of years ago, and would be willing to sell you one. Parts like that, I think, were sold by the pound, and whoever bought them probably ended up with more than they would ever need. You might also check Ebay.
Yeah they both have the old “pullmor” motors (the updated version first used ont he UP 18205 dash 8). I really wanted to run together to increase pulling power…hmmmmm
TLK,
These locos are from 1994 and have 2 Pullmor motors. The electronic e-unit probably will not handle the current of 4 motors (at least not for very long). The good news is the e-unit is still available.
You could call Lionel Service at 586-949-4100, Monday – Friday from 8 am. to 5 pm. ET at ext.1350, or you could e-mail them at techsupport@lionel.com
You can also buy this on-line, but I would check with Lionel first to make sure they agree this is the correct part.

BTW: A little more reading finds there may be a possibility that the e-unit in your existing loco may handle 10 amps. It may be possible that it could handle both units. If you do this, run them with the bodies off and check the temperature of the e-unit heat sink. If it becomes difficult to keep your finger on it then you may wi***o reconsider. You do not want to buy two e-units.
