DASH-9 SMOKE THRU CAB WINDOWS ?

WHY IS IT THAT WHEN MY DASH-9 SMOKES,THAT IT COMES(OUT ) ALSO THRU CAB WINDOWS AND ALSO FROM BOTTOM OF SHELL AT BACK-BOTTOM,IS THERE ANYWAY TO STOP THIS===,IT SEEMS ONLY THE DASH-9 ENGINES DO THIS THEIR ARE OTHER ON OUR LARGE LAYOUT ,AND THEY DO THE SAME THING( SMOKE FROM EVERYWHERE ) THANKS HUB

Vincent, it could be that oil from the motor shaft bearings has migrated onto the comutator and arcing from the brushes is making the oil smoke. The motors in Dash-9 seem to run hot, and club layouts sometimes do over-oil equipment thinking it will prevent break downs during operating sessions. Try running the engine without the shell on until it begins to smoke, then stop it and see where the smoke is coming from and feel of the motor. Wet your finger first, it may sizzle! Check for binding gears. Something is overloading the motors enough to boil the light oil.

THIS SMELL’S LIKE LIQUID SMOKE,SAME THAT COMING FROM SMOKE STACK ON TOP OF CAB,BUT WILL TRY WHAT YOU SUGGEST…THANKS HUB

Hub, I wasn’t aware that diesel engines had smoke units. When we would run out of “smoke oil” from Lionel, we would use 3-in-one oil, turned out it is about the same thing. You must have a lot of leaks in your smoke unit. Take it apart, and find the cracks. If the smoke unit is metal, the heating element may be loose. It may depend on if it is HO , G, or what size as to the type of smoke unit too.

Hi Hub,

This issue was discussed on the OGR Forum a few weeks ago. I reviewed some of those threads but never saw any type of resolution posted.

You may want to e-mail the Lionel Techs directly. You can e-mail them directly from the Lionel.com site.
