It was sad to see the news item of Myrick’s passing, as I have enjoyed reading The Railroads of Nevada and The Railroads of Arizona series. He hinted that there would be a seventh book in the Arizona series to tie up loose ends since the original books were written in the 1970’s, much the way the third book in the Nevada series did for the original two volumes.
I had been waiting since 1978 to see a detailed write-up on the Arizona Mineral Belt since his comments in Vol 1, but looks like the few sentences in Vol 6 will have to do.
Sorry to see this news. What a body of fine work he left us. It almost feels like an understatement to call him the dean of Western rail historians.
Mr. Myrick must have been a meticulous researcher, and did not rush his projects to the printer. In 1966, Trains magazine (February, p. 48) reported that there would be a third volume on Nevada rails; it went to press in 2007! So we can be grateful that he was blessed with a long life.
Yes David was very thorough but so very easy to work with. In his research about the Santa Fe for his Arizona books I had the honor, and pleasure, to be of some assistance. We shared a meal or two and , as he frequently did for those who assisted him, he used my name in one of his passages.
