Does anyone have a layout with just Budd Dayliners? and can you buy HO motorized versions of them?
Dayliners, Railiners, etc., were railroad’s name for Budd RDCs. Life Like released a few variations in HO scale several years ago. You could probably find some on eBay.
There have been several versions of the Budd RDCs (Rail Diesel Cars) produced in HO. The ones by Life-like/Walthers in the Proto 1000 series are about the best reasonably-priced ones. You can usually find them on eBay. Athearn made two basic shortened versions, one of metal in the 1950s, with a gear drive on one truck, now rare. These can run quite well if you replace the motor magnets with modern neodymium ones. They also produced up until quite recently plastic “HI-F” versions with pulley belt (rubber band) drives. Though quiet, they have very poor running characteristics, particularly at low speeds.
As to a layout with RDCs only - seems a bit limited, but hey, it’s your railroad. RDC’s were usually bought by railroads as an economy measure to provide passenger service to areas with limited ridership potential.
