Through my work I end up visiting a lot of rail yards big and small. The one thing I always try to see is what old vintage cars, loco’s and other railroad equipment I can spot from days gone by. This old stuff appeals to me so much that I plan to have an area in my yard where I will stage old antiquated equipment that has seen better days. I was thinking that if anyone else does this, how much space do you devote to this and how about a photo or two. Cobwebs and dust, weeds and all. Brent
A nifty idea, Brent. When ever I travel out of town I generaly seek out old and disused pieces of industry. My main interests are rail and shipping. History and seaching for remnants of our fore-fathers early industrail endevours are fun and exciting to discover - these are the true treasures in life.
I plan to include some derelect and unused pieces of railoroad equipment on my layout because I think this adds a positive interest and imparts a sence of history - nothing like a good piece of decay and neglect to convey this. I can afford the room because I’m going for an overall visual effect rather than an emphasis on operation.
Cheers

One thing that’s caught my eye on a couple yard visits was old, broke down MOW equipment sitting around. Especially old rail cranes. I’d like to model something like that if I can find them.
Brent, I have a old steam engine I have detailed and looking for a spur or spot to rust away at my self.
Here is a few real ones if you don’t mind.

Those are great Ken. When I look at stuff like that I can just feel the history oozing out from them. I hope I can catch the same feeling in the modelling of such scenes. Brent
Great idea!
We have a “Railway Museum” area on our HO scale club layout where old junk steamers, passenger coaches, etc. are parked. This may be overkill for your purpose, but we have 4 parallel tracks approximately 2 feet long spaced far enough apart that a strip of cork roadbed could fit between the tracks. The cork was painted to look like a concrete sidewalk for museum visitors to use.
None of this track is powered.
