dc engine with sound

I have an older atlas ho scale classic gp7 it’s dc is there a way I could add sound without converting the engine to dcc?

Most recent DCC/sound decoders are dual-mode, they operate on either DC or DCC. On DC, you have limited control of sound and other functions.

But you still have to make things fit, which will be your biggest challenge with the old Atlas.

In that case you could have your sound in a “house” car that would nearly always stay with that engine… as the “Cisco Kid” demonstrates here:

Good Luck, Ed

Just remember that the sounds will usually not start until there is about five volts DC on the rails. The microprocessor requires about that much before waking up. Decoders and even sound only modules have a microprocessor.

Well, that depends. The min is 5 volts, but usally they start with about 10 volts, in order for it to start at 5 volts, you must program the decoder’s analog start voltage.
