I am building a dc 4x8 layout. I am planning a double track main line. If I connect the two main lines with switches, will I be able to run two trains on the main line? Will my dc power pack allow that? I have a MRC Tech 4 280 dual control power pack.
If you have insulating rail joiners where the turnouts meet, yes, you can run two trains at once in oppisite directions as long as they are not on the same track. Two trains on the same track will run in the same direction. If you attempt to run a train going one way and another train going the other way through the turnouts you’ll get a short.
You need two power packs (one connected to each loop and insulators between your turnouts) to operate the two trains independently. You can run both trains with one pack, but they will both start and stop at the same time and travel in the same direction.
Loathar, I believe the tech 4280 dual control has two seperat rheostats, so the loops can be wired seperately. As per Jeffrey W’s suggestion, insulate the crossover & don’t try to go from direction to the other when crossing between the loops. [swg]

I don’t know about the MTC Tech 4 280, but some dual control power packs have only one power transformer for both throttles. If this is the case, you cannot use common rail wiring.
The Tech4 280 is two independant throttles in one housing. I’ve used it with both common rail (what it’s designed for) and independant blocks (both rails cut). It works equally well for both.
