I am thinking of purchasing the DCC system but would like to talk to someone regarding the practical use - what it is capable of and what exactly it controls. Does this system control just the engine? all trains? signal lights and turn switches? There is alot of information out there, but nothing talks about the actual actions that it does. Does the starter Bachmann kit stands alone? or do I have to purchase additional items (decoders, wire, etc). I there such a thing as a “manual for dummies” or DVD player that would show me exactly what this thing is ALL about.
According to Bachmann’s Web site, the system is built by Lenz of Germany, and can control ONLY speed, lights, and direction. A very basic, beginner’s system for people who do not own, and don’t plan to ever own, sound-equipped locomotives such as Broadway Limited Imports models.
Concerning decoders; yes, you must add them to a locomotive unless you purchase newer models that are coming on the market with decoders already installed in them, such as Atlas. Depending on the manufacturer, adding a decoder can be as simple as plugging one into a socket in the locomotive, but can also require soldering for locos that are not indicated as being “DCC Ready.” Sometimes, manufacturers even fib about this “feature” of their locomotives.
A good source of information about DCC in general that can help you is Tony’s Train Exchange (http://www.tonystrains.com). Click on the “DCC For Beginners” topic.
I bought one Sunday and watched it demo’ed. It was controling 3 locos 2 with sound functions and 1 was the Bachmann GP40. It looks good and has controls for functions. He was running a BLI E7 with sounds. Pu***he function button and select which function you want to activate. There were bells and whistles, lights etc.
