I have a number new engines (they have never seen the track yet), all Diesels. A kato, a Athearn, and an atlas that I would like to run in a consist. I plan to put the same type decoders in all of them. If I consist them, Is there any known problems that might do any damage to any of them? Or in a consist should all the engines be the same type and from the same manufacturer?
thanks for any input, ennout
You can mix and match loco’s, I run an Athearn Genesis SD75I with two Proto GP9’s sometimes, the ONR does this. I did need to change some CV’s to get the Athearn to run with the Proto’s. Put all three on your track, MU them together but leave a foot wide gap between them and see how close they run at the same speed. If one is faster then your going to have to work on the CV’s. My Athearn is just slightly faster then the Proto’s so I run it at the front of the consist.
You should have no problem at all. Mix and match to your heart’s content. Decoder brand isn’t an issue either, so don’t feel limited in that regard. You will get the best performance if your engines run at about the same speed for a given power setting. If you wish, you can adjust power curves to match them. But you can also just run them without adjustment and they will work, but maybe not a smoothly as they could.
Thanks TA462, I will give that a try. These little puppies are getting so spendy anymore. I have learn to ask questions first from the people who know.
