DCC Control installation Older Atheran RTR Diesels

Very new to DCC. Looking for tips to installation success. Have two controllers, need help!!

I was able to install a digitrax decoder in my Athearn loco – but I read a lot about how to do it before attempting it . Here are some useful sites:

http://www.mcor-nmra.org/Publications/Athearn_TuneUp.html This one describes tuning up an Athearn loco and towards the bottom describes how to install a digitrax decoder.

I found the instructions included with the decoder less than clear and incomplete. So my reading on the subject helped me be prepared and do it right the first time.

There are plenty of actual experts here that can give you additional advice too.

Hope this helps and good luck.

look at www.tcsdcc.com

They have picture tutorials for lots of decoder installations, including athearns. I also suggest you use a TCS decoder. Thier warranty is perfect for beginners, because if the decoder is ruined, even if its all your fault, they will replace it no questions asked.

There are a few things to remember

Take the brass strips off of the motor before you solder to them, if you leave them on you can damage the motor if you arent careful. But also dont lose the little spring when you take them off.

You have to break the little brass “feelers” off of the bottom strip on the motor so they dont contact the frame. Also put a little strip of electrical tape under the motor just to make sure.

Do not use the big bulb that comes in the loco. That bulb is connected to the frame and will fry a decoder as quick as anything if you try to use it. However, the mounting bracket for the light (after you remove it) is a great place to get left side power.

Other than that it is very straightforward. Decoders come with a manual that will say “red wire goes to right rail pickup, Black wire goes to left rail pickup, etc. etc.” Just route the wires where it says, make sure that everything is isolated and you should be OK.
