Does anyone have any references or articles that deal with upgrading older brass steam and diesel locos with DCC sound and lights?
I have not but here are some links to look at. I know the motors in older brass draw quite a bit of current so you will probably have to change the motors. Check how much the locos draw first off. You will probably have to unsolder the tender to open it.

Thanks, the Mark Shutzer link was very good. Pretty much what I had in mind but nice to see it written up.
The steam locos I have both have good can motors and good slow speed performance but I really want to add the DCC and lights/firebox/sound effects
That sounds good. You should be ok. I use the SoundTraxx Micro-Tsunami since my locos do not draw over 0.5 amp. Think of Litchfield Station for decoders. Free shipping over $50.00. I order from them for all my DCC needs.
