DCC interference

Has anyone had an interference problem between the use of DCC and camera phones? Our club has a large modular layout (HO one side/O the opposite side) which we transport to local shows. Some HO members have had interference problems with the control of their locos when someone sends a photo to their computer through their camera phone. The loco will change direction and just generally act strange whenever this is done. Could this cause damage to the unit?

Are you using radio control DCC or wired throttles? If RC throttles, try changing their frequency if that is possible. Wired throttles acting up like this indicate a need for shelded cable for the throttle wiring.

A couple of questions:

o - What brand of DCC system?

o - What kind/model of throttles?

If you have a Digitrax ‘wireless’ system, you can change the standard addressing of the base unit, but I think it still runs on something like a 2.4 ghz carrier. I have never had problems with my home wireless phones. I have never tried to ‘send’ a picture from my cell camera phone…

Nope, haven’t heard of that one before. There is a simple solution though. BAN CELLPHONES from use at the club or at shows. Cite safety reasons like the largely ignored laws about yaking on the phone, reading the newspaper, and driving the car all at the same time. If someone wants to take a photo, let them use a camera (regular or digital). Of course they might have to wait till they got home to load it into their computer. OMG! How could they ever wait…

Sorry for the rant… [:D]

Cell phones shouldn’t interfere with any DCC radio systems, they all use the 900mhz band. Older cordless phones use the same band, and could interfere. 2.4GHz cordless phones and 5.8GHz cordless phones should not interfere with DCC radios.
