DCC Programming: episode 15 - Introduction to JMRI
thank you for this info and this is what I want to do to my layout.
Great work guys. I’m definitely excited to see the episode on programming, speed matching, etc.
Good to see you back! I’m just about ready to start using JMRI and your series could not have come at a better time! I haven’t even done the download yet, so I can use your video to guide me. Thanks guys! I’m looking forward to this season as I think it will help me get started.
This is great stuff, solid and still manageable for beginners. I particularly appreciate your “flagging” some topics for later consideration, so we keep the main points in view while getting a promise of further details down the road. Looking forward to future installments, and using Ben and Dana together is a strong start.
Really liked the video on JMRI. Good to see that it has a few minor glitches (like forgetting the Java install) which makes it real. I am looking forward to learning more.
Excellent! Great video for the JMRI beginner.
I’m connecting my computer to the layout via a CAT5 phone line. Do I have to use a USB or can I get an adapter cable from the PC to the CAT5?
Please in the future, note that JMRI is a volunteer group and ask folks to donate something to that group when they use JMRI. There are costs to keep that group going (especially hosting a web site). I am NOT one of the programmers in the group but I have helped create decoder definitions and I make a donation annually. it doesn’t have to be much, Even $10 would probably be good. No one makes money off this… it is a labor of love for the developers group.
There is one thing I didn’t cover that I should mention here in dealing with installing any drivers on newer computers. Microsoft has changed it’s security settings there there is an extra step or two to keep in mind for Windows 8 and 8.1. Details regarding the SPROG driver installation can be found here:
I’ve been using JMRI for over 6 months with my MRC DCC system. My favorite features are the WiFi server, so I have wireless control of 1 or 2 trains per smartphone with a free app, and the Operations package, which creates manifests for trains to pick up and set out cars at locations along various routes through my layout. It’s just awesome!
Loved the presentation…easy to understand!!!
Super - thanks for tackling JMRI! I would appreciate if you would touch on some of the other major programming devices such as Digitrax (which I use) and others. This is great stuff here!
This is terrific! But could you please do this with a PR3 Digitrax and windows 7?
I could not follow you all the way through and had a few mistakes. I would very much appreciate it if you could do this for the benefit of people who use one of the most common DCC systems out there. Digitrax and NCE are the two biggest DCC systems and it would be great if you could help the users of those systems. Thank you very much.
Fantastic guys.I have an MRC Advance2 which wasn’t supported by JMRI until recently when an interface cable came out. How do I hook this up and do I still need Sprog? Thanks for helping us.
Two question One does Sprog work well through a USB Hub. Two will it work with the new Windows 10 coming out at the end of July?
i am currently using Decoder Pro with an NCE Power Pro, USB Serial cable and PTB 100 to program my engines. Can you tell me why you find it necessary to use a Sprog unit?

For anyone using MRC system for this. Has anyone used a serial to CAT5 adapter instead of the adapter they sell? I have been trying to get this to work for a few days now and I’m not sure if I’m maybe not installing the device drivers correctly or configuring the COM ports. Using a computer with windows xp. Just cant get the computer and command station to talk. Using Prodigy Express System. Thanks!!
how do I find the answers to my question? I looked but maybe in the wrong sections
Dana and Ben, Well done, gentlemen! Although I only understood 10% of this process (being 90% computer Illiterate) I look forward to seeing more in this series. I am still learning DCC and have not learned how to program …anything, yet. My home layout will have a Digitax system (as on my club’s layout) eventually. JMRI looks to be far more intuitive (as you said) than by throttle alone. All of this (on computer) will be centuries away for me; but, never the less, keep this stuff coming! I will get it come heck or high water! BTW: Tell Jenny I liked this. I just saw her August MR Insider.
