DCC ready locos

Train show season coming up and I’m looking to buy some new locos. If I buy a Dcc ready engine, can I still run it with just a transformer? I have not equiped my railroad with DCC yet but intend on it some day. Thanks Jamie

There is a difference between “DCC Ready” and “DCC Equiped”. A DCC ready locomotive comes with a circuit board that only holds the LED lights. This loco is designed to run on DC power packs only, until you buy a replacement circuit board that has a DCC decoder chip installed. These are easy to swap out at a later date. BUT, then you will have to agonize over having to buy a “bunch” of decoders all at once when you do convert. Think about buying a DCC Equiped loco now. It is more expensive, but comes with a decoder already installed. They are designed to also run in a “passive” mode on straight DC power packs. Then your fleet is already DCC equiped for the jump to light speed when you do go DCC.

Thanks Robert.Dcc Equiped wuold be the ones that I look for. Do I have to do anything Special to the engine to run it on DC or just put it on the track and go and ricvera for the DCC jamie

Most DCC decoders will run on a DC layout, but that capability can be turned off.

Check with the vendor prior to sale. That said, I would definately buy DCC equipped (Bachmann calls it DCC On Board). But then, I am already DCC and wouldn’t go back. I even put decoders in the grandchildren’s trains. (Thomas the Tank Engine and Hogwarts Express)

Phoebe, look at the thread date. Looks like you’ve been HAD. [;)]

If it’s DCC ready, you can run it out of the box on a DC layout until you put a decoder in it. if it’s DCC equipped it’s usually set on default address 03 and won’t run on a DC layout unless it’s addressed to address 00 . You may need to find a buddy that has DCC and have him put it on the programming track and enter an address of 00 so you can run it on a DC layout.

So it does. But it’s still good advise even if the guy who asked for it has grandchildren of his own now … lol.

I see there are a bunch of old threads here suddenly. Something must be amiss on the server.

I think we have troll problems again…chuck
