Has any one installed a sound decoder in an Athearn RTR locomotive. I have an SD60 and an SD40. Both are dcc ready. One runs as quiet and smooth as can be but the other is a bit noisy. So far I have been unable to locate a sound decoder with a nine pin plug. Thanks in advane for any advice.
Kyle…I was searching for Genesis F7 decoder information last night and ran across this article. Perhaps it will help get you pointed in the right direction. Good luck. Mac
You can use a MRC drop in decoder w/sound, model 1638 (I think). It replaces the existing board. You will have to solder a pick-up wire to the top motor clip as the decoder is actually a replacement board for the Gensis line locos and doesn’t have a clip that slips ontop of the Athearn motor clip.
Personally, I would use a Loksound decoder, they are the best ones out there. If you dont want to spend $110 you could go with soundtraxx. Stay away from MRC though.
I’ve got several soundtraxx decoders that I paid $53 for and am very satisfied with them. Go to tonystrainexchange.com or loystoys.com and see if their selection of decoders fits your bill.
