I have a Lenz decoder in my Bachmann 2-8-0, its starts nice and slow (will also run very slow) and it comes to a stop nice and slow. My problem is its top speed seems too slow. What do I need to do to improve top speed?
Make sure CV5 is set to 0 so there is no top speed limit. I have one of the pre-Spectrum 2-8-0’s and even on DC with no decoder it’s not all that fast, but that’s completely realistic. A 2-8-0 is not a fast passenger loco and should not run very fast.

I agree, a Bachmann 2-8-0 is not meant to go fast. The prototype Consolidations were designed to travel at top speeds between 30 and 40 mph, so the Bachmann is geared realistically.
Thanks guys, I know the 2-8-0 is not built for speed but mine was running at a bout 10 or 15mph tops. I changed CV 5 and its now running faster certainlly more like 35mph.
