dcs o gauge

i have a question if your running say four or five loco’s on a lay out and you only have one z4000 should you add more transformers to your layout ? if so how ? and what kind ? and where ? thanks

I’m in HO and your post has me puzzled. What is a z4000? What do you mean by “dcs”? Are you running scale equipment or Lionel (or other three rail)? If you’re referred to scale equipment it’s all DC powered and the use of the word “transformer” is not appropriate. With Lionel or other AC powered equipment “transformer” is absolutely correct. Please provide more details.

Welcome to the forum Minez. This question will have better responses over on the Classic Toy Trains forum. That forum specializes in 3 rail O.

The general answer to your question is you only need more transformers when the total power needed to operate all of the motors and lights, exceedes the capacity of the
transformer(s) you have. This has nothing to do with DCS. One Z4000 should handle 4 or 5 trains, but you might be getting close to the limit.

Ask this again over on CTT, and you will get more answers.

By the way Ed, a Z4000 is MTH’s big transformer (AC), and DCS is MTH’s command system.
