With everyone’s help, I finally got my MTH DCS engine to run in command mode.
So, with that problem solved, I proceeded to connect my two AIUs to the TIU. According to my owner’s manual, up to 5 AIUs can be daisy chained to one TIU. When I hit the read buttom on the remote, the view screen said “found one TIU, 6 AIUs”.
Any ideas on that jewel? It’s almost impossible to hook up these wrong. And I did check to see that the included cables were inserted correctly.
Your brainstorming on this one will be appreciated.

I have no idea… but that is some interesting Math… goodness… what happens with 5 AIUs?
I believe you need to set them up in “Super TIU” mode. Check the manual, but I believe you do that from the handheld. Under Menu - System Control - TIU - Setup
One TIU does not need to be set up in Super TIU mode. It is the only one so there would be no need to do that.
When you turn on the remote it tells you how many TIU’s and AIU’s are connected without hitting the read button. If it correctly lists 1 TIU and 2 AIU’s that would be a good start. You did not say if the AIU’s were new or not. If you had used them before and installed them where AIU 1 was now chained in behind AIU 2 you caused this to happen. If you did this twice you hit the 5 you are seeing. Delete them all and start from scratch as if new. Do this even if they are new. Add one at a time and learn it to the TIU so it will be identified correctly. After this all should be fine.
Take CAre…
Billman - YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!! I don’t know what I was thinking (thinking 2 TIU’s, Sr. Moment, I guess) Definetly do NOT need Super TIU mode. I am really SORRY !!!
In answer to your question re are the AIUs new, they are, sort of. In Sep '06, my local HS had a store-wide 30% off sale of everything he had. I used the opportunity to buy an MTH Premier Shay, Z4000, DCS system, and two AIUs. Unfortunately, my layout at that time was not yet at the wired stage. It was not until a couple of weeks ago that I could finally try this stuff out. Following a lot of experimenting and help from the folks on this forum, I was finally able to get the remote to recognize the engine and operate it in command mode. There’s certainly a lesson learned here for me: don’t buy a complicated electronic gadget unless it can be tested within the warranty period. I seem to remember a discussion on this forum re comparing the merits of MTH’s DCS and Lionel’s TMCC. If my memory is correct, the majority opinion favored Lionel’s. But I did not read that until sometime after I purchased the MTH stuff. If I had to do it over, I would buy the Lionel system. MTH has removed the toll free number from the web site. It takes nearly a week to get an answer via e-mail and the answer(s) is (are) often not even in the ball park. Every time I use their web site, I run into bugs/hang-ups, etc.
Back to the main subj: I took your suggestion and hooked up a single AIU and tried the “read” function. It did not recognize the AIU. To make sure I tried all possibilities I hooked each one individually and also switched the provided cables. The remote only recognizes the engine and the TIU. The last thing I did was completely reset the remote, delete the engine and TIU and start over. No change. I forgot to mention that when I turned on the remote again after the “6 AIUs found” incident, it changed to “1 TIU found, 0 AIUs found”.
If the AIUs are defective, I suspect they are not repairable. These days a lot of electronic devices are jun
