Well as long as this is the Depot Diner and Coffee Shop thread, lemme tell you all a little story.

When I was in kindergarten or first grade, my dad’s cousin Judy would occasionally take my baby sister and me to a malt shop located very near the Fox River Grove, Ill. train station (C.& N.W.). The proprietor would mix ice cream, milk, chocolate syrup, and powdered malt together in one of those stainless steel blender cups and then pour that delicious liquid into a nice clear tumbler glass. The flavor of those ice cream treats made a real impression on that little boy.

Now fast forward 15-years.

I’m now 21 years old and having lunch at the depot diner at Pueblo Union Station. I ordered a chocolate malt from the old battle-axe behind the counter and she reluctantly agreed to make me one - just like she reluctantly agreed to cook me a hamburger and later reluctantly agreed to pour me a cup of coffee after the meal. She may have been a crabby old gal, but she did have certain culinary talents that remain a fond memory to this day.

As my waitress carefully assembled the ingredients - whole milk, Sealtest ice cream, Hershey’s chocolate syrup, and Carnation brand powdered malt, my anticipation grew. When the beverage was ready, she brought me that same stainless steel blender cup and the same tall tumbler glass that I knew as a toddler and slowly poured the contents. “Mmmm,” I thought, “I bet this is gonna be a good one!”

Well, sure enough, one sip and my mind slipped back to 1954 or 1955 - just like a lot of the locomotives I saw passing by the depot that day! My God, I savored every sip of that malt like

Uh…what of the other thread that’s got 5 or so pages already???

Ummmm, good question, Dan! And where is Joe?!?! Haven’t seen him around, and I’m just seeing this one. [%-)]
