Well, this was entirely different from what I expected to see…I’m relieved in a way, because I was waiting to hear about a fatal accident at a grade crossing.
You can try Walthers as they now own LifeLike. Ask for “axle gears”. If they don’t have them in stock yet, try Athearn, Proto gears are clones of the Athearns.
This was only a problem with the early GPs and LifeLike was very good about supplying free replacement parts, denegrating the whole product line because of a few early models with one problem which was corrected is a bit heavy handed. Proto 2000 is a very good value for the buck. It does remain to be seen how well Walthers keeps it up in the future.
The question is have you seen the new prices? P2K has reach the prices of Atlas,Kato and Genesis and still suffers problems.
What concerns me is how many dealers will tack on the new higher prices on their old stock?
David said:And again my very large collection of P2K loco’s have not had one single problem.
So, you are implying you been lucky so far? ? [;)]
I still think the P2K GP7/9/30 shells are out standing…
Horizon Hobby (horizonhobby.com) has the Athearn axle gears at 6/$2. I presume that these are what the original post was about. The Athearn gears should work on the P2K axles.
I may be poking in to where I don’t belong. But, they may just focus on the P2K line with greater detail than their other products. Just like how many people hate Bachmann’s standard line, but love the Spectrum line. Maybe L-L’s standard line are more so designed to be “disposable,” whereas the P2K is meant to last? Just a thought.[2c]
Semafore I just sent two loco’s, both Proto back to Walthers for warranty repair. They did warn me about a sixty day turn around. We shall see if they are up to servicing they new purchase( life like). Phil
