I was sad, but not really surprised, to read of the death of Paul Stringham in today’s Newswire. Because he shot mostly black and white photos maybe fewer fans know his name today but for 50 plus years he was a very famous railfan and railroad expert.
Stringham had been taking excellent railfan photos since the 1930s – I think some of his shots appear in the Lucius Beebe books published before WWII, and his (co-authored) book on the Chicago & Illinois Midland is one of the really fine books out there, and brings good prices at swap meets. Not too many years ago I had the pleasure of meeting him at the railroad show in Galesburg. I think he was close to 90 at the time and was frail but bright as a penny and could still reel off facts and information about the railroad history of Peoria.
If we’re all lucky we’ll do as well.
