Decal paper types?

Looking at Micro Marks catalog, in the section on making your own decals, I see there are two types of paper listed for inkjet printers…, a clear/white and the white/white. What are the two types for and which is used the most?

The Clear white is for anything that doesnt have white in it,the other is just what it says for white. You may want to look here,I use this all the time as I make HO Scale truck decals.

Thanks for the website tip Ed (isn’t this forum great?). I haven’t yet tried making decals on my inkjet printer, but I think I need to start. Lettering a 36’ passenger car for the Newburgh, Dutchess & Connecticut RR is unbelievably time consuming (there are lots of individual letters). I looked into having custom decals made but the price was astronomical. There are limitations with inkjet decals…namely you can’t make a pure white decal (no colored borders or background) without having a special inkjet printer. Other than that limitation, making your own decals seems to be the way to go…especially for those of us that model a long-gone branchline (the N.D.& C. was absored into the Central New England, which was eventually absorbed into the New Haven).

Hmmmm… thanks Ed, I think I understand. If you’re making a decal that has no white in the subject, use the clear and if you’re making one that does have white use the white/white paper? Is that right?

I have achieved great results with the Evan Designs decal paper. They claim that no sealer is necessary and its true! Just let the printed decal dry for at least 30 minutes prior to wetting for application. The paper comes only in white, but is supposed to become clear if topped with a coat of Testors DulCote. I haven’t tried this but the “no sealer” claim is absolutely true.
