Decal Question: New York Central

Hi guys,

I’m about to metalize a batch of passenger cars for a friend of mine.

After I finish, he wants to decal them into the New York Central scheme. I looked at Microscale’s website, and the selection for the lightweights shows 4 selections that say “Silver Streamlined” with limited descriptions.

Has anyone here purchased HO NYC decals for SS Budds and know which is the appropriate decal sheet?

I saw four selections - two each in HO and N. While I certainly saw the prototype cars locally, I was too young to note any lettering differences, and now model an earlier period. [swg]

While both sheets are somewhat difficult to read, Set 1353 seems to include more lettering for head end cars than does Set 1352. Both sets seem to include the same selection of NYC subsidiary reporting marks.

If your friend is a New York Central modeller or fan, why not ask him? Whenever I do custom painting, I ask the customer to provide photos of the prototype if possible, or photos of something similar, whether it’s the paint scheme, lettering layout, or even the weathering.

If your friend is uncertain which is correct, perhaps Microscale can shed some light on the subject,.

Doc,

Thank you, your info is helpful.

He’s not certain so I’m researching the info for him and plan on zipping him an email, suggesting which sheet he should order. I’ll ask him to go for the 87-1352.

He’s freelancing as he has five Model Power passenger cars that were in the Amtrak Phase 1 scheme. Although these are out of production “shorties”, they’re not bad looking units. They’re equipped with interiors and the shells look considerably better than the Athearn Blue Box lightweight “shorties” that so many of us grew up with. Since he recently helped me out, I’m returning the favor by Alcladding the shells for him.

He has a Spectrum HO NYC 4-8-4 Niagara that he normally hauls heavyweight passenger cars wtih. He thought it would be neat to have some lightweight cars as well. He plans to buy some 85ft cars in the long run.

Yeah, I think that the 1352 set would probably be the best choice for what’s required. I hope you’ll let us see the finished results, once he’s seen them first, of course. [swg]

I believe the excellent website of Terry Link www.canadasouthern.com not only covers all varieties of lettering and paint schemes NYC rolling stock ever had, but also notes for modellers including on decals etc.

wait here it is:

and here’s the light weight car roster:
