Decal Removal

Hello, I’m Peter, If oyu go onto the Garden Railways forum you can see I’m pretty active in it. As in my bio, I love to model in N scale and HO scale and I often come over to this forum to look at all the great information. I have a question about decals, how would you remove a number or 2 from the road number than replace it with a new number? Thanks for all the help. - Peter

Removal?

Heck, I am still trying to figure out a foolproof way of putting decals on my stuff.

First of all, make sure they are decals and not painted on as this will determine how to remove the number. There have been quite a few threads in the past about this subject. Try entering a term like “removing decals” in the Search Community to the right. Here are good link to get you started. Often time prototypical railroads spray a “patch” and then renumber. Check this link for more info. A couple of good sources for railroad specific decal letters and numbers are Microscale or decals and dry transfer letters and numbers from Woodland Scenics. Also try the tags I’ve provided below.

I normally use Solvaset and a pencil eraser. Coat the offending number with Solvaset. Let set for a few minutes (or more then a few depending on the stubbornness of the lettering). Gently rub with eraser. Wipe off the smootz and you’re good to go. Be careful though, you can take the underlying paint off, if you rub too aggressively.
