Can anyone suggest a store bought or homemade decal remover? I need to remove the decals off of an HO steam engine. Help is appreciated.
I’ve had good luck with Staedtler Mars Plastic Erasers.

I think I bought a three-pack of them at Wal-Mart for about $3 a few years ago. Quite useful for removing both actual decals and pad-printed lettering (i.e. removing numbers from old Athearn Blue-Box diesels for renumbering).
I can’t offer any advice. But it occurs to me that the results from the use of any recommended product would depend on whether or not the decal had been sealed with either a gloss or dull product after application. Therefore, it would be helpful if anyone responding to this question would specify if the decal had been sealed and what damage, if any, became apparent to the surrounding area during the removal process.
True if you use a chemical. Microscale or whomever makes one. But I strongly advocate the white ghrapher’s eraser. It’ll take a while, you’ll get fed up with it not doing aything, and then POOF the decal is gone. just be careful not to rub too deep with the eraser, or you’ll hurt the car. But tha’s true with any decal remover, eraser or solution
Do you mean an actual water slide decal on the model, or the original factory applied lettering? This lettering would have been stamped on with a pad printer, and is actually paint. Using the suggested methods are intended for this type of lettering. This often results in an area that has a different sheen than the surrounding area due to the rubbing with the eraser.
