decals and glue

I am just curious what is the best glue to use to apply decals to a structure? I am mainly concerned with plastic and wood applications.

I’m no expert on the subject, but I’ll take a shot at it…

To begin with, there are different types of decals including those that you soak in water and apply, rub on, stick on and glue on. If you really want to get fancy you can go with stencils… Anyways. What I’ve always done is apply a water soak decal to a surface painted with a flat finish because these types of decals won’t stick to a flat painted surface. Once dried, I wet my finger and stick it to the back of the decal which in turn sticks to my wet finger. I then carefully paint the back side of the decal with a thin coat of ModPodge believe it or not, then place the decal where I want it. However, there are other methods and other types of glue, but like I said in the beginning, I’m no expert at this… Hopefully someone else will come along that can be of better help to you.

Good luck.

Do you mean decals or paper signs? Decals are printed on a clear film that has glue on the back that fixes them to surfaces. Just dip them in water and slide off when they are ready, no glue required.

I am familiar with the decals that you wet. I should’ve specified the paper type where an adhesive is required.

Images/text/signs that you have to wet are decals. Anything else isn’t.

If you want to stick paper signs to structures, use plain white glue (Elmers’ and such).

I like the idea of MogPodge though for those paper applications. It will act more like wallpaper paste. Of coarse this is only for flat surfaces. Brick/ textured walls do better w/ decal, dry transfer or stencils.
