I’ve got the oppertunity to purchase for the right price a much needed long out of production SP caboose that was only produced in brass. The delima is that it is factory painted in the rare for the prototype silver SP piggyback colors which is about 10 years beyond the era I model. Despite this slight complication, I want it badly! What is one to do?
Depends on your budget, of course. But for me, I’d hold out for the colors I really want. There’s always another caboose coming down the tracks.[;)]

My advice is buy it, and run it. Make up a story about it. The only person who will really know will be you, and maybe another hard core SP fan. Most people wouldn’t know the difference, unless you told them.[swg]
I spoke with a fellow S modler who is familar with this run, he advised me to drop the cash for this limited run baby now or he will, regardless of my modeling preference! Now lets see, I know where to get the Piggyback flats and trailers in 3/16 scale and some matching F7s for power. Issue settled.
Thanks for the input and sound advice from all on a difficuilt decision caused by me being a stickler when it comes to using proper equiptment for the correct time period… Sometimes i’m my own worst enemy!
Dave, I’ll be the first to confess that it’s easy to get hung up on a theme. My mixed era dilema is a bit more obvious. On the one hand I want to keep my railroad as modern as possible, but on the other hand, I own a lot of 40’ box cars with roof walks.
It sounds like that caboose is getting more expensive, if you have to buy cars and engines to go with it. If you’re married, I hope your wife doesn’t find a purse that needs a new outfit. My ex pulled that kind of stuff.[:0][:o)][;)]
Enjoy the caboose. Remember, we’re all here to give you a nickel’s worth of free advice, all you have to do is ask.[swg]
You could always tell the questioner that the company was trialing a new paint scheme, and they had experimented on an old caboose that was in the shops anyway.
Buy. If the price is right, the purchase must be as well. As to period, well, it’s
still your railroad, to do with as you choose, and anyway, even though I’m
sort of a GN nitpicker, I like both steam(!!) and first and early second generation
diesels AND the GN’s Empire Builder paint scheme-so I chose a rather
accommodating period-GN from 1947 to 1967. (Big Sky Blue is not a bad
color scheme, but it replaced an all time classic. IMHP.) Anyway, like the
ad says-JUST DO IT![:D]
I agree with dinwitty-I’d buy it ,since it’s what you want it. If your not happy later, brass is easier to clean and repaint. Can you get the same exact body style in a completely different road name for a lot less money and repaint it? If not, go for it!
