Decoder Issue

Hi:

First I wanted to say that I’m new to this forum and have really learned a lot and have enjoyed reading most of the threads.

My problem is one that I created myself and hopefully someone can help me out. I received an Athearn Genesis F9 as a gift. I put it on my test track and ran it using my DigiTrax Super Chief system. It ran well on address 3 and was able to change some of the sound settings like the bell and horn and things. I then wanted to change the address to 800 from 3 and that’s when something went south on me. Now I cannot find the loco at address 3 or 800 and it just sits there. I don’t see in the docs where I can just return to factory settings. The decoder information says to go to CV 125 and enter 1. I do that and the throttle says Good, but the loco still sits there.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Michael

Michael,

[#welcome] What part of Jax do you live in? I grew up in the Riverside area and now live in Cleveland.

What decoder comes with your F9? Is it a sound decoder? If so, then it’s an MRC decoder. If you want to reset you decoder to the original factory settings, go to this link, find your decoder, enter the correct input for that CV, and press ENTER. That should do it.

Hope that helps…

Tom

Update:

Michael, I double-checked the link. It appears that it is the MRC decoder and that you are entering the correct number. You said that you are doing the reset on your test track. (I assume you don’t have a layout set up yet?)

Are you programming in program mode or OPS mode? Sometimes Digitrax needs an extra boost when programming sound decoders. I’ve heard of a resistor being soldered between the two rails that was used to help with this. Can someone verify this?

[#welcome] to the forums.

Also what you could do is change the address again. You don’t nessesarily need to reset the decoder to do so.

Simply put it on your test track and go to “pro” or program. Change the address to 3 again. Once that works then change the locomotive number to 8 instead of 800. Usually when you go into the 100 addresses and up it takes more programming to do so. Thats why I stick with the first 99 addresses.

Hopefully this helps.

Happy railroading[(-D]

James

Thanks Tom and James. I was able to get the loco running back on the default 3. I ended up resetting the CV125 to 1, and then it came to life on 3, then I moved the address to 8. I still want to one day get the thing to 800 (loco number), but for now 8 is good enough.

Tom: We (wife and I) live on the Westside in Ortega. The last 5 or so years has really seen this town grown. Most believe that it was the Jaguars that spurred the growth.

No layout yet. The entire railroad consists of the DigiTrax, a single flex-track, an engine (F9 800) and several cars. I’m negotiating “land grants” with the wife [8D]. At the moment the price is high but I should end up with a small 7X13 layout.

Again many thanks to both of you for the help!
