Decoders and Steam Locomotives

This might seem like a stupid question, but where do you put a dcc decoder on an N scale steam locomotive?

In the tender.

Andrew

in a few engins you can also put it in the cab.

Just to add to my oh-so-helpful answer above (sorry about that [;)]) I would note that if you are having trouble making it fit, you might go to a Z-scale decoder to squeeze it in. If you have a relatively new engine, like the Atlas N steamer (is it a 4-6-0?) it is probably DCC ready, which should make things easier.

Andrew

You could always tape it to the uidnerside, but make sure you have clearance so it don;t snag things [:P]

I recently installed a LE0521W lenz decoder into a Bachmann 2-8-0 and placed it up front where there is a small weight. Well, after doing that the engine ran poorly becuase of removing the weight and fouling the electrical pickup. I then ran power to the engine from the tender to solve that problem. Next time I will just place the decoder in the tender and leave the weight up front.
