What happened to the D&H? Did they merge with another road, if so, who did they merge with? What road inherited the trackage rights?

It began as the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company. The D&H imported the first steam locomotive into the United States. In 1984 it was acquired by the Guilford System and In 1991 it was acquired by Canadian Pacific.
Well, yes, the company name exists again; it was taken away by the CP at one time but was returned for the operation. But all engines are CP or possibly Soo. The Penn Div. was pulled up and all traffic goes through Binghamton, NY and on to Taylor Yard rather than Wilkes Barre via the former DL&W then on to the former PRR to Sunbury and the NS to Harrisburg. They picked up westbound traffic from Binghamton at the beginning of CR which is now haulage by NS with CP locomotives. The name D&H was the oldest name in US transportation companies and that corporate charter, I believe, is no longer in force. Today’s D&H name is an operating name for CP only. There are two roadswitchers still painted D&H. Others, I know, have more complete and detailed information which I hope will be posted.
Delaware & Hudson probably still exists as a corporate entity. It would be an American subsidiary of Canadian Pacific, same as Soo Line.
It is a corporate entity today; a new one. It is not the original company which I beleive was dissolved shortly after CP purchase of the property.
The original corporate entity of D&H changed its name to Champlain National Corp and sold the railroad to a new corporation which was owned indirectly by N&W through its Dereco subsidiary. Dereco was to be the method used by N&W to absorb Erie Lackawanna, Delaware & Hudson and Boston & Maine. This all fell through in the fallout from the Penn Central and other bankruptcies in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. D&H then came under control of Guilford and later fell into its own Chapter 11 proceedings. NYS&W operated D&H briefly under a directed service order and the property was then sold to a new D&H under CP control.
