Delaware & Hudson and the warbonnet design...

I noticed recently that photos of Delaware & Hudson PAs, although in blue and yellow, had the war bonnet design of the Santa Fe.
(Certainly looked quite smart! [:)])
Did D&H get permission from Santa Fe to copy that design, albeit in different colours? I think I smell a little story here.[:p]…heh heh [;)][:)]

Kozzie,
IIRC these were former Santa Fe units later purchased by D&H…D&H just modified the colors…

MP, I guess this is a case of “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” - rather than D&H using a differrent design for these PAs…

Dave

Kozzie,

Indeed. Agree with your comment that they looked “smart” (in photos; never saw them in person). I have seen many photos of these units over the years, in books and magazines; they were a popular railfan subject.

There was an interesting story regarding this paint scheme as applied to the Sharks. Somebody painted up a model locomotive with the D&H colors and the scheme and showed it to Sterzing or one of the other higher-ups, who liked it. Over that weekend, the somebody got to thinking that the old NYC lightning-stripe theme was better-looking, and painted THAT up in D&H colors. But by the time he showed it, the decision had been made to proceed with the war-bonnets…
