Absolutely sickening. Everyone involved in this should be ashamed of themselves.
It looks like an HH Richardson design. What a shame.
Cover it in graffiti and Union Pacific would have ignored it. This is a shame.
Look at this building. Then compare it to the schlock that is built today. This building was more than just a station or an outpost for a corporation. It is a statement. It is a symbol not just for the age it was built in but for all time. Now look at the junk modern architects spew out in our age. It will be dated and obsolete in less than a decade. This building, even as it is razed, looks forward. After it is gone which way will we look?
Approaching a billion dollars to move it for a small town, some times you just got to look at the return on you tax dollars.
$750,000…thousand…not million.
Would it have been less expensive to relocate the tracks?
A very sad day. No replacement is available.
Sad news and lack of civic pride. I hope UP doesn’t now demolish the station in Laramie.
Something seems amiss, UP wants to return 2 locos to steam but then tear this grand old station down. UP should of offered to move it as a matter of good will and the towns focal point.
Shame on you UP. A building from the 1880’s callously torn down. I bet anything NS would have gone the extra mile to save it.
Teutonic peak above the bay window, and those columns are usually reserved for bigger station designs. Sad!
How ironic - the UP heritage museum in Council Bluffs is in the old Carnegie Library there, which never was a railroad facility … then they go and tear down this real piece of railroad heritage. Speaks more of Union Pathetic’s selectivity than of any real sense of “heritage”.
