Depot Without Track for 70 Years

Wanted to share this image from yesterday of the Soldier’s Home depot (Pacific Electric, nee Los Angeles Pacific), which I believe had its tracks torn out in 1940, and yet remains looking remarkably like it does in photographs from about 1920 when still served by the railroad.

Thanks for looking and corrections are welcome.

Any idea why the window frames appear in better condition than the rest of the building?

Optical illusion of some sort. They’re a complete mess too.

neat looking building, anyone/any group planning a restoration?

I don’t think so. It belongs to the VA and is on a campus that includes a lot of older buildings. You sort of fee like you’ve driven into a time machine on that part of the campus. But, the land that it is on is right smack dab on the most expensive part of Wilshire Blvd that there is (the corridor from Santa Monica to Brentwood to Westwood to Beverly Hills).

I am actually pretty worried about it and all the buildings over there.

.

You say this bldg is on VA properyt,it might be purchased for just paying to move it ? Are there any preservationist in your area? I would sure try to get it preserved before its demolished to make room for something else…It looks remarkably intact !

It’s a tough one, Videomaker… because there aren’t any strong orginizations here on the westside of LA. I think it might be able to get a group in the Inland Empire or Orange County to step in, but I woudn’t want it moved unless that was the only way to save it. It’s kind of nice that it’s still here where it was built.
