Detailing 50 ft. Express Reefer

I picked up an Athearn Express Reefer kit and I can’t seem to find any prototype photos for detailing purposes. It’s the Athearn 5334 which is the Pennsy REA Reefer car, build date is 3-29. Anyone have any links to similar cars? Thanks, Phillip

phillip as far as i know the express reefers were head end cars and would have all the necessary hoses and piping such as trainline, steam line signal line etc. have you checked www.rr-fallenflags.org yet?? there is tons of rr pics there and show some detail shots.

i picked a 2 pack of BLI express reefers recently and they have ice hatches in the roof .

hope this helps

tom

Cal Scale makes the air, signal, and steam lines for express reefers. They are easy to install and look great. If you e-mail me your address I have an extra pack I could mail you. I think I can dig up some prototype pics and will post them when I find them.

You won’t find anything on the PRR that even closely resembles the Athearn car. The correct car for the PRR is the Walthers R50b. Take it from a guy whgo has several of those cars!

I thought that the Pennsy ran the REA cars.

Maybe this one as well… Im not sure if this is a real photo or not… If it’s not it’s a heck of a model lol… but I think this is what your lookin for!

Probablky every REA car in existance ran on the PRR but the woodside Athearn car is just plain wrong. As far as I know the only PRR cars lettered for both were B60b and R50b cars.
