My mom bought me a Lionel HO GP9 that is practically brand new in the box. It is the Penn Central version. Is there detailing parts available for this beast? The hand rails are not on it, nor are they in the box. The thing runs great.
That said, is this locomotive worth going into the effort to find and add the details? How reliable were the Lionel HO locos? This is the only one I have ever seen.
Never owned one, never have seen one run that I know of, but did see plenty of them advertised while I was drooling over the front section of the Lionel catalog, saving my pennys and nickles to buy O scale box cars (R-T-R) for $5.95.
I would suggest going to a Walthers catalog and checking out what they have available for rails. If they don’t list anything specifically for Lionel, you could use the manufacture information to contact them directly and see if they know what might fit. If you can find a photo of a similar loco, you could even make rails out of brass wire.
Okay, so I went down to the dungeon and opened the GP-9 up. I looked everywhere for a date. The box has Lionel HO, Penn Central GP - 9, 5-5700. Inside the windows it has 50-5402-020 F. The motor says: General Electric, Made in USA on one side and 3 ADM 4F50A1 10 75. The under frame has Lionel, Mt. Clemens, Mich, 48043, Molded in Canada.
Here are some pics I took of it.
So I get the box again and look it over. Slide out the cardboard inner sleeve and see a yellowed pieve of paper sticking out of one side. Roll that side up and it is trouble shooting instruction AND instructions for attaching the handrails.
So I fold up the other side of the cardboard liner and guess what…HANDRAILS!!! [:$]
I’am thing try athearn and make them fit it would probably would look great the model looks good and would make a great project. post it after. rambo1…
The good thing about this engine is it was probably a Athearn mold! I would get some Athearn handrails and use them. In fact, I have the same engine but its in GTW paint. Kevin
I have the same base engine (painted in the American Flyer paint scheme) except mine has a broken plastic piece that holds the non-drive wheels to the block. I would like to replace the plastic piece but have no idea where to find one or even begin looking. Can someone point me in the right direction?
You could “start conversation” (lower right side of his message box) with the original poster to see if he has any information on parts.
If all his information is out dated you could browse the detail parts manufacturers listings to see if they have something that would do. You might have to buy a complete truck or set of trucks.
