Detroit and Toledo Shore Cars

Who owns/ops the Detroit and Toledo Shore cars? Is it GTW?

Well, technically it’s CN now–the Detroit & Toledo Shore Line was merged into GTW, and many of its cars were relettered and renumbered into GTW series. The survivors (at last count, 31 covered hoppers, four box cars, four flat cars, and six coil gons) may get repainted but will continue to carry their DTS numbers (given CN’s apparent policy of not relettering anything).

i see… thanks a lot!

The N&W and Grand Trunk Western were joint owners of the Detroit & Toledo ShoreLine. In 1980 GTW got the entire D&TS. In the 1990’s CN started to put their Corporate image on the GTW.

Most of the Detroit & Toldeo Shoreline 60’ Auto Parts Boxcars were repainted by GTW/CN in the 1990’s .

Only a few of the DT&S ACF Center Flow 2-Bay Covered Hoppers were repainted by GTW in the 1990’s and CN’ in the 2000’s.

One of the big questions that I have is about the ACF built cars operated by the Detroit & Toledo ShoreLine. Are there photos of the Detroit & Toledo ShoreLine freight cars in the large Signature Press book about the American Car & Foundry built freight cars? If so, which ones.

Has anybody seen photos of the Detroit & Toldeo ShoreLine ACF Center Flow Cylindrical Hoppers in the D&TS 2500 series when they were new in the 1960’s?

Andrew

as Carl has stated CN owns the hoppers now.I have seen a few 2 bay hoppers come down through Deshler on trains going to and coming off of the toledo sub in deshler.

The former D&TS ACF 2-Bay Hoppers, still in their original markings, are now being operated with GTW ACF 2-Bay Hoppers and WISCONSIN CENTRAL 2-Bay Covered Hoppers in trains through Michigan.

Andrew

The Grand Trunk Corporation owns the Detroit & Toledo ShoreLine freight equipment while the Canadian National operates the trains.

I have not seen the former DT&S ACF 60’ Auto Parts Box Cars in South Bend to Battle Creek trains lately.

What are still in use today are 1960’s built DT&S 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars.

The 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars have all been repainted by the Grand Trunk Western with 12 added before the old DT&S road numbers.

Not true…the D&TS cars that became GTW all had “10” prefixes. The D&TS hi-cubes, numbered in the 5700 series, thus were renumbered into the GTW 105700 series.

The cars in the GTW 126000 and 127000 series were former DT&I 26000- and 27000-series cars.

I thought the DT&I and D&TS renumbering was that way too, but then I looked up D&TS and GTW 86’ Auto Parts Box Car photos on www.rr-fallenflags.org and it seems like all the second hand 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars ended up in the GTW 120000 number series.

I can’t see how you draw that conclusion–GTW 105750 is a hi-cube car shown on the site. All of the other hi-cubes are in the 126000 and 127000 series, occupying numbers that correspond with DT&I 26000- and 27000-series cars. A look at equipment registers will also confirm this, as will detailed comparisons, such as single- vs. double-opening cars, and the spotting characteristics that can be used to determine builders, and other such things. Trust me on this one!

Then I will have to check all the actual photos and compare them to each other and the rosters.
