Detroit streetcar project receives federal funding

Does anybody even live in Detroit? There are no traffic nightmares, unless you count the line of trucks trying to get to the bridge into Canada. Last time I went thru in rush hour, it could have just as well been during a Packer game in Green Bay. Now the state is talking about unincorporating Detroit into Wayne County. Who is going to ride the m-1 with nobody living there? I pass blocks of open fields, full of weeds. If anything, Detroit should be looking into converting itself into forests to keep the tree huggers happy.

Well all rite lets get rid of the bus,s bring back street cars to every city

As a child in the late 40s and 50s, I remember the PCC trolley cars running up and down Woodward Ave when visiting my grandparents. You could even buy a pull toy trolley car at Hudson’s when it was still there on Woodward. This will mean badly needed jobs and hopefully affordable pollution-free transportation for folks living in what was once one of America’s most splendid cities. Like in LA, Detroit is going back to get to the future!

Based on recent news and statistics from Detroit, they need an additonal stop at the Detroit Medical Center trauma unit…

Should we laugh or cry?

46 cents of every dollar of this “investment” is borrowed to be paid by our children or printed from thin air.

Jeffery Guse, your are such a jackass!

I think this is great news. I am hoping the line extends though to the Amtrak station and will proceed through downdown to the Mariners Church where the tunnel buses can be boarded to Windsor for the VIA station. This would greatly enhance rail passenger service connections for Amtrak passengers to Toronto.

Street cars belong in the BigEasy, not the old Rust Bucket…

Once again great news for Detroit and Michigan, as we evolve away from an economy solely dependent upon the automobile into one where rail and light rail transportation is a valid and realistic alternative. Yes, Mr. Guse, Mr. Sewell, and Mr. Sheller, I am proud to live in Detroit and I encourage you to visit my city and ride on our high-speed Amtrak trains across Michigan, and light rail cars in Detroit. I could write many pejorative statements about your states of Colorado, Washington and Illinois; but I would rather write about the positive things going on in my hometown, Detroit.

mel and mo . I sugest you read the facts about detroit . they have actualy shut off utilities to parts of the city and police no longer patrol certain areas. its a cespool . over half the population recieves some type of goverment assistance. your throwing tax money into a cespool of human waste . this is going nowhere fast . cronyism is exactly what this is . buying the votes from the ghetto . there buses are broken down and dont run . people wait hours for buses that never show up . I suggest you folks read before you comment

Detroit’s population is down to approx. 700,000 from over 1 million and is still falling. The place largely looks like a war zone with the exception of the heart of the business district.

The project is another example of social engineering at work and the taxpayers getting the bill.

Hello Bejing? Yes we need some more cash for another inept project.

A new light rail system and commuter train system in Detroit will be a welcome sight. I grew up in Ann Arbor and recall how Motown was growing during the 1960’s. The new bridge proposal downriver is another teaparty turnpike proposal doomed to failure that needs to havie its funding scotched out immediately before the rest of Micihigan’s roads deteriorate way beyond repair. Too much new highway construction is what is sucking off most of the money for the upkeep and repair of the exisiting insfrastructure. Why build new roads if there is no growth? I’ve gone across the border numerous times in the trcuk and had no problem with waiting to get across the Ambassador Bridge. Most of the delays there are caused by customs being too intrusiveon inspections, not traffic. No new bridge is needed downriver. The light rail connections will ease traffic problems across the border and offer seamless connections for those who do not drive across the border and want to travel by bus or train. The downriver bridge will only sap more money out of Detroit’s economy and force trucking companies to buy and burn up more fuel getting across the border. The new downriver bridge is also slated to be built on top of a few infamous sinkholes on the Canadian side owned by Petro giant BP. A new rail tunnel was also built to accomodate double-stack trains which would also allow Amtrak to offer through Superliner or bi-level service from Chicago-Toronto through Detroit as well.

Matthew Brandley, why are you sticking up for Mr. Guse? This clown spews nothing by Right-wing drivel.
