Detroit streetcar project selects Inekon to supply vehicles

I guess the sun hasn’t yet set on April Fool’s Day, the clock hasn’t struck midnight yet.

3.3 miles of streetcar project costing $137 million?
6 streetcars costing $30 million?

The phrase “if I wasn’t laughing, I’d be crying,.” applies.
I’m not laughing.

The $137 price included the streetcars and of that $137 million total 100 million was from private sources including Roger Penske (Penske trucks, Penske racing etc) also Dan Gilbert (owner of Quicken loans, Rock Finance, Cleveland Cavaliers, etc.) Kresge foundation and more heavy hitters.

Yes it does seem on the surface that it is a high price but remember this is all being constructed in a heavy urban setting not the wide open spaces hence the price tag.

To Mr. Carlin:

How much is the Frisco to L.A. high speed train going to cost? I think that it will cost a colossal amount of money - in the billions and billions. Are you crying about that project, too? I am not; we need more rail transportation throughout America.

Being a former Michigan resident who grew up there, it’s sad to see so many people out of work in Detroit along with so many abandoned buildings. Detroit needs jobs now! I hope they will find some place in the greater motor city area to do the assembly work on these streetcars. I look forward to taking a ride on them the next time I get a chance to spend some vacation time in Michigan.
