I would like to build my own diamond crossing (N scale). From reading MR magazine, model railroaders seem to build their own all the time, so this should be attainable.
Where can I find instructions or examples detailing how to build a diamond crossing?
A single track crossing another single track would require 4 frogs. Years ago I built one for a club layout that worked good. Hand laying one should be no different then making 4 switch frogs. If you are running larger engines then a 0-4-0T then gaping the 4 frogs dead would be no big deal.
Go to the Fast-tracks website. There you will find all kinds of info. including free printouts of crossings, turnouts and other info. They are in all Scales and you can download them and then print them of to your hearts content. Just make sure that you print them to the correct size for the scale that you are working in. Tim also has a number of great video’s including how to solder track.
I generally build my diamonds because getting the geometry to work for a commercial one is usually a pain. I would try www.handlaidtrack.com The have a large set of templates. I generally develop my own as the geometries of mine are generally to fit a specific location.
Send Me a PM and I will send you a PDF of my how-to clinic on laying diamonds.
Below is an example in HO but the principles are the same. I have done the same thing in N
I think a crossing requires more than a turnout. Here’s my HowTo. My latest were H0n3 curved crossings, and dual gauge turnouts. My latest turnouts were build with code 40 rail for my narrow gauge module Salina.
