Did ATSF have any Snoots ?

What is the extended length of the CN units’ snoots. I have heard both 109" and 110". The reason I am asking all these snooty questions is that I have written an article for my train club newspaper and need to clarify some details before publication. [8D]

Do you need any snooty photos for your article?[:D]

Jim

I have photos of the Cotton Belt, SP, UP, and Santa Fe snoots. I don’t have anything on either of the Canadians or the KCS. [:I] My email is in my profile.

Well I thought I’d ask, can’t help with CN or KCS. Maybe you’ll get help with the CN or KCS photos from someone on this forum. I certainly hope someone steps up to the plate to help.

Jim

KCS snoots were 677 to 686 according to the September 1979 Trains magazine. 677, 678, 679, 683, 684 were masters and 680, 681, 682, 685, and 686 were slaves.
SD40 604 to 635 and SD40-2 661 to 676 had regular noses and Locotrol.

Ed-What do you have for unit totals on each railroad ?

There must have been some Kodachorme snoots.
It seems like only clean Kodachromes get posted.
Is there a website where I can see some dirty Kodachromes ?

This shows some CN and BCR model snoots

GCFX 3057 was CP 5686

11 CP SD40-2’s that were owned by Ontario Hydro were transfered to CN in 1996 and 1999.
CN 5388 was CP 5779, 5389-5780, 5390-5781, 5391-5782, 5392-5883, 5393-5885, 5394-5861, 5395-5862, 5396-5784, 5397-5786, 5398-5860. 10 of these were sold back to CP and 5391 is still on the roster.

The February 2001 Railroad Model Craftsman is supposed to have an article on snoots but I don’t have any RMCs.

The book Canadian Pacific Diesel Locomotives was published in 1981. Page 127 states-
All SD40-2s for CP from GMD order C-363 onward (units delivered after January 1st 1974) have been built with an extended low nose (an added 20-1/2 inches) to accommodate Locotrol equipment whether the units are actually equiped or not.

This would be units 5675 to 6069, totaling 376 locomotives.

BC Rail got 12 SD40-2’s in 1980 (751-762) which were an add on to a CP order and they got 5 more in 1985 (763-767).
BC Rail then bought some second hand EMD units, 7 from Kennecott Copper ( 736-742) and 8 from Oneida and Western (Shamrock Coal Company) which became 743-750.

I found seven Kodachrome snoots. Santa Fe 5022, 5023, 5026, and 5117. This information is from Gene Crossett’s Santa Fe roster linked on Q Station http://www.qstation.org/. Southern Pacific had three Kodachrome snoots: 8315, 8351, and 8377. This information is from Richard Percy’s Espee Modeler’s Homepage http://espee.railfan.net/espee.html.

if i recall i remember seeing a bit of text where some atsf president had a crew wash a couple of locos to impress the president of some other trucking company. the details are a bit hazy though

Yep, don’t we all sound like that sometimes - thanks for the out-loud belly laugh this morning!

Mike Haverty and J.B. Hunt

Now that’s good. Will I find the text in PRN?

I have watched several locomotives go through the wash rack lately. Frankly, the wash rack needs to be about a mile long for it to do much good. [:(] [:0]

I think I saw one of these the other day. The nose was much longer than normal and someone made a comment about it. It was a lessor unit and the nose was red, I think the body was black. It was a fairly new paint job too.

Gene Crossett drop me a line with your email and we can get this snoot thing worked out for Santa Fe.

Ed

You mean RSD15?

What method is used to run DPU’s today?. Can any unit be used as a master or a slave?
