After numerous attempts to purchase a Proto 2000 2-8-8-2 with sound/DCC at on-line dealers ( they have one listed but then email me and say sorry ) I had a look on ebay. I got what I wanted N&W 2009 and paid $400US including shipping.
I thought what the h**l I want it and I’m gunna have it.
Ken–most of the prices I’ve seen for the 2-8-8-2 with sound begin at $400 and go up to about $525, so it looks to me like you got the low end of the bargain. Let us know how it is when you get it, okay? Personally, I’m just not that impressed with the pulling power of the Proto 2000 steam I’ve got–maybe this new run is an improvement.
Keep us posted.

Ken,
The cheapest that I have seen them at any of the on-line dealers is $339 at Trainworld + shipping. But they might not have them in stock. I think you got an OK deal since they are shipping it to NZ. Let me know what you think of it. I just got the latest version without sound #2028. I compared it to the one I already had, #2050 from the second release and I was amazed at the level of individual detail they put on these models. I thought that it might just be the tender that changed (#2028 has the USRA and #2050 has the N&W doghouse tender) but the piping was different as was many of the other detail parts. It runs great on DC, and I will probably put another MRC sound decoder in it so that it sounds like my other one.
Thanks Guys, I’ve got the steam bug and can’t stop looking for nice big loco’s!!
I’ll have to stop and concentrate on getting the layout running again. (temporary as it is, till the permanant one comes along)
While we are doing all this property investment stuff, I’m not going to spend too much time on the layout I have. In 4-5 years when we are in the home we want to stay in then I’ll start on something permanant.
