HI Everyone I was in Madison, Wisconsin today for a trip today and every single railroad crossing. That I crossed aleast 12 times all of them had the sign. NO TRAIN HORN but on most crossings I saw only lights and no gates. And on other ones I only saw a cross buck and nothing else. So I really think that it is dangerous in some parts of madison that don’t have anything execpt for a cross buck.
Apparently you’re not on the WSOR Yahoo!Group…
Madison, to say the least, isn’t the smartest city that I’ve known. Make it so every crossing is totally safe, THEN put the law into effect. When they had the WSOR’s 25th Anneversary celebration in Madison, WSOR got in trouble with the city because they blew the 1003’s (a SOO steam engine) whistle. A bunch of jerks, in my own opinion.

Madison: “36 square miles surrounded by reality”–Lee Dreyfus, former governor
Pat:
Last I heard, the ‘no train horn’ signs were supposed to come down this June or July (whenever the new federal grace period ends). I believe the city has budgeted several million over the next few years to upgrade the crossing signals to ‘quiet zone’ standards.
Living just outside the “Mad City”, I do know how screwed up Madison is, It’s good for a laugh every now and then.
When was the last time there was a grade crossing accident in Madison? [:)]
And all of the trains in Madison travel at 10mph.
The Wisconsin cities of Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, and Burlington are also no-whistle.
That maybe why there seem to have been no grade crossing accidents in Madison[:D]
Too bad there is not a “quiet zone” downtown on capitol square, the citizens would be much better off if the governor and legislature would just shut up.
If you go to Madison, take a look at the Whitney Way crossing. Also look at the photo:

Stop, look, and listen at those exempt and 10mph crossings…
They just put up barrier gates on the West Washington Avenue crossing within the past two to three months as well.
Hey zardosz did you get any more photos on Friday when you were up here?
So what happens if I blow my air horn when a wayward car gets in front of me? Oh well, don’t plan on visitin anytime soon.

Dan,
Yes, I did. Because I got home late, and work all weekend, I haven’t had a chance to download them yet from the camera. When I do, I’ll email you a few of them if you want. I sure do like that location.
It was nice meeting you.
Jim
Nothing, the ordinance was written to allow horn blowing in an emergency.
Now if Madison could make State Street a Quiet Zone…
