I miss speeders: they have a lot more character than pickup trucks.
So, I was surprised to see, on a Class I railroad, a speeder a few days ago. It was on the UP (former SP) right-of-way at the east of end of Ozol yard (immediately west of Martinez, CA).

So, no one’s interested in speeders.

Odd, I photographed a similar speeder in a similar state of distress in the badlands of Utah on the Rio Grande 30 years ago, wonder if they ever got around to fixing it, or could this be…?
Seriously, they are a rare sight these days.

The only speeders that I have seen are ones that are restored at Steamtown N.H.S., and only one or two at that.
I haven’t seen any on the sides of mainlines in my whole life.
Some of the UP’s system gangs have them as part of their equipment. The local MOW/Signal people use hi-rail equipped trucks and pick ups.
The last time I saw a track inspector ride his territory on a speeder was about 30 years ago. Once or twice a year the motor car owner’s group do trips on the Boone & Scenic Valley RR.

Passed by the speeder today. Appears that the wheel has been fixed.
