What is the difference on the outside between the two? The best I could tell was a different “electronics” cabinet behind the cab.
How does one remove the handrails on a RTR model so I can repaint it? I am looking for a SD-40-2 but Athearn is making the newer/updated version in the SD-40 model only.
And why is it so hard to find undecorated models more![:(!]

The SD40-2 is longer than the SD40. The trucks should be different. The dynamic brakes (if it has them) should be different. The radiator grills may be different. The SD40-2 should have a water sight glass on the right side, while the SD40 should not.
Horizon Hobby lists several Athearn Blue Box SD40-2s as being available on its website, so I am sure you can find them from various sources. By the way, the three SD40-2s I have about in the past couple of years have had the new drive and plastic handrails.
