Difference in rail joiners regarding track code?

I will be starting to lay some track real soon (HO Atlas code 83 flex, Peco code 83 turnouts). I’ve done all my homework but need to clarify something. Does it make a difference if I use code 83 or code 100 rail joiners? Obviously I should use 83, but my LHS only stocks 100 - would be nice to be able to pick them up there in a pinch instead of waiting. (I know…I should just order a couple gross and not worry about running out, but I plan on destroying several dozen till I get good at it).

Also, does it matter if I use Atlas or Peco joiners since I’m mixing track brands? I’m guessing the only real difference is price.

Am I over-thinking this?

Jim

Short answer to your last question - Yes!

However, a few things I discovered along the way:

  1. Peco code 83 joiners do not fit Atlas code 83 (The Atlas rail base is ‘thicker’ than the Peco.

  2. Atlas code 83 joiners do fit, but as you now suspect, they’re a ‘loose’ fit - Not a problem if you’re reasonably good with a pair of long nose pliers and a soldering iron…

  3. Once upon a time I used Atlas code 100 joiners with the feeders already attached - Again, they fit the Peco rails.

  4. The code 100 joiners once crimped down look a little gnarly, but you’re going to ballast over 'em eventually anyway aren’t you

As long as the track is aligned correctly both vertically annd laterally (remember - no stinkin’ kinks!) you’re good to go.

As usual, ymmv,

Ian

I use N scale joiners
they are smaller less obtrusive
tighter fit
they take some working to get them on
but I read it in MR once

I have used them all, and each one has its problems and advantages as mentioned above. The biggest thing is what’s availible. The strange thing is they all work.

thats neat never tryied different ones its all been code 100 for me.
