Different Horn

What type of horn is on this engine and why did the gates go down at the exact same time the lights started?

Here’s the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZSLW5RhNHA

Because that’s the way this crossing gate was designed.

I noticed people commenting on that below the video. Seems inconvenient not to have a few moments before the arm gate lowers to make sure you are clear. Not that you shouldn’t be anyway, just sayin…

I don’t think the gates were particularly quick to come down - it’s not like they were coming down before the lights came on.

I have no idea on the horn. Barring a resident expert popping in, try a search for “train horns.” There are several that have samples. The down side is that it sounds like one of the higher pitched bells may not have been working, which may make it hard to match.

the horn is definetly mono-toned, witch means the horn is fouled, and cannot sound the normal tones

on 3 or 5 bells ???

CNs SD70-Ms have similar sounding horns, I wonder if the fact that the horns have 3 trumpets or bells and the centre one faces backward might have something to do with the gargley sound. It’s not an isolated instance as they all sound the same.

Also, crossing lights in Canada usually come on a few seconds before the gates start to lower, just to give you time to stop.
