Digitrax DH142 2 problems

Hi There;
One of the guys in my club bought a Life like GP38 with a DH142 hard wired decoder installed. First problem when he unplugs the walk around throttle the loco stops dead. I had the same issue with a BLI Mike but it was only a matter of changing a CV value to correct. The second problem is the loco surges that is it runs about 6feet ,slows for about a foot & then resumes speed. Any ideas what maybe causing this? Solutions welcome.
Tom
PS We are using CVP easy DCC

The DH142 supports back EMF train control. It sounds to me like the loco has one or more of the three CVs (I think they are 17, 18 and 19) that are used for setting up EMF control set outside of the normal range. Go to Digitrax’s web page and they have a pretty good tutorial on how to set those CVs. What I would do first is set the three CVs to default (i.e., not Back EMF effect) and see if the loco runs right. If it does, then proceed with playing around with the EMF control. It can do wonders with getting a poorly running loco operating pretty well.
